This chase would become one that I quickly had regrets with. Once I got to just north of Springtown, Texas, I saw a loosely organized storm coming in from near Poolville. Instead of going towards it, I decided to find another storm to target. This decision would come to be the biggest mistake of my day. While I was looking for an isolated supercell to fire off of the incoming cold front, I would find myself getting too close and it would come to cost me a bigger opportunity further east of the D/ FW metro. As I was pushing to get to near Mineral Wells, I could see that the speed of the cold front was really kicking in fast. This meant I had a much more limited window of opportunity setting before me. When I saw my storm of the day, I knew one thing. It would be my one chance for something exciting, or so I thought. As it was coming towards me, I could see on the radar that there was potential. When you see the radar in the episode, that pink-ish area you see is typically representative of potentially severe hail, 1 inch in size (quarter) or larger, or a good size hail core. This was simply not the case this time. The storm was severe warned for 65 mph winds (the severe wind threshold sits at 58 mph) and nickel sized hail. Despite the storm being weaker in person than it appeared on radar, there was still some pretty awesome cloud activity at the base of it. This is why I decided to try filming something, so I could walk away with more than nothing. Plus, this was my first real chase of the year with the equipment I had bought. It was time to put it to work. Coming to the conclusion of this chase, it was not a bad introduction to the season but had I gone east of D/ FW instead of west, I would have possibly seen the tornado which touched down near Mt. Vernon or even the Pickton tornado. I think the reason I didn’t take that chance is because I was not ready to face what could have been a very long drive going back home.
