Episode 4
4 May 2023
This was the first real chase of the year where I felt more confident in the potential than any other day to this point in time. It would also take me to one of my more favorite chase locations, around the Wichita Falls/ northwest Texas region. I don’t know why I love this area so much, especially since the road networks are not the best. From a storm structure point of view, this became the immediate best chase of the year. Especially given all that I had missed up until this point in time. From the start of the day, I felt fairly confident in what I would see but I did not know it would be as pretty as it would be. While in pursuit of my first storm of the day, the challenges became more and more apparent. As I was getting ahead of the storm, trying to pull over and get a photo or even a video was becoming harder and harder to do. The storm was gaining more ground on me than I realized. It’s not that it was moving at a very fast speed but there were no suitable north to south road options so I could pull over and let it just pass me by. I finally gave up and decided to push to get south of Archer City. As I was pushing south, I could see an incoming new storm with a very well defined wall cloud, which is seen in the episode. This immediately got me excited because I was out in the middle of nowhere and so was this beauty. If memory serves me right, it even had a Tornado Velocity Signature, at one point. Though, I never did see a funnel but still, what a sight to see. Once I saw all of this, it became my storm of the day. The whole day was beautiful but Mother Nature did have one more trick. As with the last storm, there were no suitable road options to keep me ahead of it. I mean, I drive a mid size SUV and chases like this really make me miss my truck so much. Then all roads or no roads wouldn’t make a difference because I could really have fun. Joking aside, I decided to let the storm pass me and I would time lapse its backside as it drifted away. Though I don’t remember exactly how long after, Mother Nature decided to drop one tornado after that beautiful storm passed me by. The final time lapse in the episode is the backside of that storm. Still, what a great chase day overall.
