Episode 2
15 April 2024
When I tell you that this was a challenge, it certainly proved to be a bigger one than I was ready to accept. The low lying clouds came in with a vengeance but I was so optimistic there would be a sufficient break in the clouds. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. Though, when the first impressive storm was firing off near Aspermont, Texas, a familiar place, I knew I had to get to it. I believe I was in Haskell when I made this decision but as I was going through Rule and about to take U.S Highway 380 West, the fire department had the whole road shut down. There was some structure fire there along the streets and there were no sufficient alternative ways around, given the vehicle I drive. It was then I decided to push towards Knox City but that effort would come to be a dud. Yet, by this time, the skies had cleared and the hope for something fun to happen came back into me. I also knew it would be a true roll of luck to see anything so I remained cautiously optimistic. This late in the day can bring a last minute blowup but the real reason it never happened was the lack of a more prolonged period of surface heating. I mean, if you watch the last two time lapses, you will see exactly what I mean. I mean, you can see that she tried, but that was about it. At least I can say I tried, as well. When this storm was at its most mature stage, she put out so much lightning that it became mesmerizing. Unfortunately, daytime lightning is not my strength and as I was trying to set up for the shot I really wanted, she was coming closer and closer. Forcing my hand, I finally had to give up and get in the car but I remained hopeful that after she passed, I could get some similar lightning activity from the backside. Well, I did, but not really. Though, the patience did pay off with the one shot I did get. Here’s a little secret about that one shot. I actually did edit out the power lines in the shot as leaving them in would have really been very distracting to the final image.
